Homosexuality And Its Effects On Homosexuality - 1455 Words

Researchers conducted a randomized study to for two purposes. The first was to find out if beliefs about the genetic or environmental etiology of homosexuality can be modified by reading a text. The second was the causal effect of attributions on the controllability or non-controllability of homosexuality on the rejection of same-sex parenting. The sample consisted of 190 Spanish university students, 39 men and 150 women, around the age of 22 years. The data collection took place in March 2012. Researchers hypothesized that a heterosexual’s attitude toward homosexuality will be more negative if it is attributed to controllable causes. It was found that the beliefs about the etiology could be altered by a written text. Additionally,†¦show more content†¦The opposing theory, that sexual orientation is learned and even chosen means that the individual is responsible for his or her preference. These two theories are often correlated to the attitudes shown towards homos exuals. This study provided participants with a text; each participant received a text based on either the genetic etiology or the environmental etiology of homosexuality. The text was the independent variable and the belief was the dependent variable. Researchers wanted to see what kind of effect, if any, the texts had on the participant’s view on homosexuality and their views on same-sex parenting. The â€Å"research hypothesis maintained that the scores of the two conditions on the rejection of same-sex parenting variable would show a statistically significant difference (Frias-Navarro, Monterde-i-Bort, Pascual-Soler, Badenes-Ribiera, 2015).† It was expected that a significant difference would be found on the opinions of social rights for homosexuals. Most of the studies on this subject have used non-experimental or correlational designs. This study was correlational, it wanted to see the relationship between the text on learned or genetic etiology and feelings towards homosexuality and the social rights that come with it. The main purpose for this study was to find out if attributions about the learned or genetic etiology of homosexuality make
